Hot Tub/Spa

General

  1. Outdoor installations (see provisions for "Swimming Pool"). NEC 680-40.

  2. Bond all metal within 5 ft. of hot tub walls. NEC 680-41(d).

  3. "In-sight" disconnect required. NEC 430-102.

Receptacles, Indoor Installations

  1. Package units cord-connected if less than or equal to 15 ft. long and GFCI-protected. NEC 680-40, exception#2.

  2. At least one GFCI-protected 125V, 15- or 20-amp receptacle is required between 5 ft. to 10 ft. from inside wall of spa. NEC 680-41(a)1,2.

  3. No receptacle outlets allowed less than 5 ft. from inside wall of spa or hot tub measured horizontally. NEC 680-41(a)1.

  4. Receptacles supplying power to the spa or hot tub need to be GFCI-protected. NEC 680-41(a)3.

Lighting, Indoor Installations

  1. Lighting fixtures, outlets and ceiling fans located above the spa or hot tube, or within 5 ft. from inside walls, shall be min. 7 ft. 6 in. above the max. water level and shall be protected by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter. NEC 680-41(b).

  2. Lighting fixtures, outlets and ceiling fans located 12 ft. above max. water line do not need protection by a ground-fault circuit-interrupter. NEC 680-41(b)1, exception #1.

  3. Light fixtures may be installed less than 7 ft. 6 in. above water line, if the one of the two exceptions, a or b, is met. See NEC 680-41(b)1, exception #2.

  4. Wall switches, NEC 680-41(c): Min. 5 ft. from hot tub walls.

  5. Bonding: NEC 680-41(d).

  6. Grounding: NEC 680-41(f,g).
