3. What operating system do I need to run CodeBuddy?

Windows 95, 98, 2000, ME or NT 4.0 or newer.

4. Any software I need on my computer in order to run CodeBuddy?

Microsoft Internet Explorer browser version 4.0 or newer should be installed on your computer when using CodeBuddy.  Internet Explorer version 4.0 or newer is highly recommended. CodeBuddy programs run within the  browser environment. If you do not have the browser already on your system, you can install a custom browser that is included on the CD.

5. I already have Microsoft Internet Explorer (MSIE) 4.0 or newer on my computer. What do I have to do to run CodeBuddy?

You can install CodeBuddy and then install the customized version of Explorer  4.0 that is included on the CD. Or you can use the browser that is already on your computer.

6. I have version 2.0 of Microsoft Internet Explorer installed. Will it work?

No. The browser must be frames-capable (Versions 4.0 and newer). You need  to install the custom browser included in the CD.

7. I have just installed Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0. Will it work?

Yes. MSIE 4.0 works just fine with all versions of CodeBuddy. It is a must if you are using CodeBuddy versions 3.0 and above. CodeBuddy programs will also work with the new Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0.

8. What will happen when I install Windows 98, ME or 2000 operating system on my computer?

Nothing! You will be able to use CodeBuddy as you always have.

9. I installed CodeBuddy Version 2.5 and everything seems ok. When I double-clicked the icon on the desktop, instead of starting the program, I get a screen with notes and a "License Agreement" shows up instead. What is going on?

What you are describing is a condition that will occur when you are using a browser that does not support frames. This is typical of the Internet Explorer and Netscape versions that are prior to version 3.0. You have to install a frames-capable browser in order to run CodeBuddy. The CD that you have includes such a browser (Microsoft's Internet Explorer 3.02) that you can install. This should take care of the problem. By the way, the same scenario will happen in CodeBuddy Version 2.0 and other versions if you are using an older browser.

10. I have Netscape's browser 3.0. What are my options.

Although CodeBuddy can run under Netscape's browser 3.0 and newer, there are features in the program that will not run under this browser and you may see error messages. You need to install Internet Explorer 3.0 or newer (for CodeBuddy Versions 2.0 and 2.5) or Internet Explorer 4.0 for all other versions for optimized performance. You may have the two browsers on your computer, but CodeBuddy should run under Microsoft's Internet Explorer. For a discussion about coexistence between Netscape & Internet Explorer browsers, read this article. Note that Internet Explorer 4.0 will work with all CodeBuddy products.

11. What type of hardware do I need  to use CodeBuddy?

Pentium-type highly recommended. 16 MB of RAM, 40 MB or more free hard disk space, SVGA monitor, CD-ROM port- to install the program to your hard disk.

12. What codes are referenced in CodeBuddy?

Version 2.0 is for residential one and two family dwellings and of wood-frame construction and it references the 1997 UBC; 1994 UMC, UPC and 1993 NEC. In 1Q, 2001, this version will be upgraded to "Version 2.0-01" and will reference the 1997 UMC/UPC & 1996 NEC. Free upgrade for current version 2.0 users.

Version 2.0-01 download became available on July 8, 2001.

Version 2.5 references the 1995 CABO One and Two Family Dwelling Code and contains Oregon's 1996 amendments (Oregon One & Two Family Dwelling Specialty Code).

Version 5.0H-98 (Disabled Access) references the 1998 California Building Code and  latest ADA Accessibility Guidelines.

The INs and OUTs of EGRESS This program was developed exclusively for the International Conference of Building Officials, ICBO. It references the 1997 Uniform Building Code. This program will have everything you need regarding the Means of Egress, including the  text of chapter 10, tables, graphics, notes, code applications from 1988-1997, commentary and much more. A "must-have" tool for designers, plan checkers, inspectors, educators and students and anyone needing instant egress information.

Future versions will reference the latest codes. Visit the homepage http://www.naffainc.com for the latest information. Upgrades and patches for each version will be available to download over the internet by registered users.

13. Does CodeBuddy include all the text/information/tables, etc, printed in the codes or on media products?

Of course not! The text, short cuts, tables, etc, in CodeBuddy are paraphrases and condensed information by the authors so that one does not have to read many lines and pages to get an answer to his/her research topic or at least direct the user to location(s) in the printed/media codes that information can be located or researched further. The program will address most commonly used and pertinent information that is usually researched by the user- repetitive and/or hard to explain or understand by reading topics. CodeBuddy is not intended to replace any of the printed codes or CD-ROMs, but to complement them as a simple & powerful research and training tool.

CodeBuddy, Version 5.0H-98 and the INs and OUTs of EGRESS programs contain the entire text of the applicable code sections for reference.

14. Why no manual included with CodeBuddy?

One of the premises of this software is the ease of use since the user can be an expert or a novice alike. As such, once installed, the program is used by simply clicking on icons, linked text, "back" and "front" to move around. If the program halts for any reason; refresh and start again. Nothing is lost!  The more the user gets familiar with the ins and outs of the program- by practice and exploring the content, the faster the rewards. With this simplicity, why include a manual that no one will probably read anyway. Also, from the "Help" section, one can access the developer's web site for additional up-to-date solutions and news regarding each product.

15. Do I have to be an Architect to use CodeBuddy?

No. As a matter of fact, anyone needing practical information dealing with building code and/or design topics  will find something special in CodeBuddy to meet his/her needs. You will use different portions of the program depending on your need. Current users are architects, engineers, building officials, builders and contractors, remodelers, plan checkers, inspectors, builders, facility managers, navy construction engineers, contractors, designers, educators and students & home owners.

16. Does CodeBuddy CD need to remain in the CD-ROM drive while I use CodeBuddy program?

No. The CD is used only to  install the program on your hard drive and does not have to remain in the CD-ROM drive. All information will be stored on your computer's hard drive for instant access. All new versions of CodeBuddy will be available as downloads (no CD's). All new versions of CodeBuddy software (developed after January, 2001) will be available through downloads only (no CD's).

17. Do I need to be on the internet to use CodeBuddy?

Absolutely not. Although the programs run under the browser, you do not have to be connected to the internet. All work will take place locally on your computer. If you have a "live" connection to the internet, CodeBuddy can be used as your browser. This is one of the powerful features of the program- integration with the internet. Some extension features of the program will need an internet connection, such as online registration of your software and access to web sites recommended by CodeBuddy.

18. Can I print or copy/paste anything I see on CodeBuddy's screen?

Yes, provided you follow these simple rules:

       A. TEXT: To print text you see on the screen, highlight the text, copy/paste to your word processor program and then print from the word processor. Do not click on printer icon on the tools bars. Otherwise, you will print many pages that you probably did not need! Copy/paste can also be used to transfer text from CodeBuddy to your word processor. If the frame windows contains all the text that you need, simply click on the printer icon and that's it!

       B. SKETCHES & TABLES: To print sketches and tables, simply click on the printer icon located on the tools bar above. Copy/paste can also be used to transfer sketches and tables from CodeBuddy to your word processor.

19. Why can't  I see the entire screens when I load CodeBuddy?

The screen resolution must be correctly set to see the entire screen of CodeBuddy. The program was optimized to be viewed at either 1024x768 or 800x600 resolution and minimum 256 colors.
